The remains of this great Venetian fortress are easily recognisable. Part of an imposing star shaped fortification, as intended by Sammicheli (1520); it must have been impenetrable, thanks to its five corners, seven bulwarks and two closely fitting doors. Its current shape is the result of interventions by the Republic of Venice. Nowadays it houses the Civic Art Gallery and is a venue for cultural activities. Orzinuovi’s Civic Art Gallery was opened in May 2014. It is located within the picturesque Rocca di San Giorgio in Piazza Garibaldi and houses a pictorial and sculptural wealth of 100 works, ranging from nineteenth century genre art to contemporary installations. The works of the civic collection have all been transferred here; they were enriched year by year not only thanks to the painting competitions held during the town’s very popular Agricultural Show, but also thanks to donations by guest artists at exhibitions and cultural events, such as Ligabue and Zigania.
