Parish church of San Giacomo
Worth mentioning for its singularity, and unique in this area, is the little eighteenth century pre-Napoleonic Camposanto, or cemetery, known as the “Sagrato”, or churchyard, of Borgo San Giacomo. Completed in 1778 and originally called the Camposanto di San Giacomo as it lay next to the Parish church; it is still in excellent condition. It takes the shape of a very elegant cloister with porticos. It has a central chapel and its façade overlooks the road. Issued in 1804 the edict of Saint Cloud, a Napoleonic law, forbade the burial of the dead within the town, so the Churchyard Cemetery was finally abandoned in 1822. Although abandoned, the old cemetery was still surrounded by the respect and veneration of the townsfolk who wished to see it carefully preserved not only because of its magnificence, but also because in this sacred place lay the remains of their loved ones.
