Church of San Giorgio

Church of San Giorgio

Latitudine: 45.636768

Longitudine: 9.934961

An old abandoned church, dedicated to saints Gervasio and Protasio and standing close to the hill where the old castle stood, was once the parish church, while the existing parish church is dedicated to Saint George and is located in the lower part of the town. Building began in the fifteenth century with modifications being made later, including construction of the side aisles in 1892. Between 1911 and 1912 the church was again remodelled with restructuring of the apse too. The altar of Christ Resurrected is worth a mention with its painting by Romanino, the great sixteenth century artist from Brescia. The main altarpiece depicts St. George and was created by Ludovico Gallina in 1782. Also worthy of note is the church’s nineteenth century organ, belonging to the Serassi family.
